Age 46

I found Functional Patterns 4.5 years ago. Started the 10 week online course and when i got to week 5, I realized that after being a personal trainer for over a decade, I couldn't even do a knee plank properly. So, I jumped online and employed an Functional Patterns Practitioner to help.

Prior to finding FP, I’d done CrossFit, Olympic Weightlifting, Yoga, Pilates and various other sports. As I got older, the injuries started coming. The usual way I would deal with it was: get an injury, see a physiotherapist or chiropractor, they would give me some exercises to fix the problem and send me on my way. But soon after, the injury would come back or shift to another spot. It got so bad that I was on painkillers and anti-inflammatories every day. I have an S shaped scoliosis, so I need to be even more careful with how I move. I had chronic lower back 9/10, neck pain 8/10, Rib pain 5/10, and hip pain 5/10. They are now 0/10, 0/10, 0/10, 1/10.

I had digestive issues due to the stress of the pain and the painkillers. I was depressed and angry. Now, my digestion is good and my mood is stable.

I only use FP to get the results that I have. I am a FP Human Biomechanics Specialist Level 2. I work from a PT Studio in Penrith NSW and for Functional Patterns Brisbane online. I am a Dad to an amazing daughter, and it is so important that I stay pain free and functional so I can continue to raise a healthy kid and enjoy my time with her. I am able to do that because of FP and how I apply myself to the protocols.

I've know Luke for some time now. He trained at a gym i was working at. I asked him how his training was going and he mentioned that, nothing was helping to get out of pain. All the conventional training methods was failing and putting him into more pain... he was at the end of line of what could make him feel better. He had constant issues with his lower back, sore feet, poorly mended broken ankle at the tibia ankle joint and the surgeon rode him off after surgery saying; "any further type of surgeries won't help". Another thing he said to me was that he dreaded training. He loved lifting weights, playing rugby league and running, but couldn't do any of that as it only exacerbated his pain points.

Luke has experienced some major changes in the time I've been training him. We continued to chip away and get his body working as a system, but in the last 6 months, he has had exponential growth.

The ability to put socks on standing up, more mobility and flexibility, massive decrease in low back pain, from 8/10- 1/10, strength/range of motion increase in ankle with a massive reduction in pain from 7/10- 1/10, being on feet for work as he always had sore feet has been reduced from a 6/10- 1/10.

Luke trains primarily with the Functional Patterns methodology. He trains with me once a week, then does mfr and repeats our workouts in other training sessions in the gym. He eats well, gets enough sun, sleep and regneration protocols. Last month, Luke gave a food elimination protocol a go with some good success after it. His progress will only continue to get better as he is on a path that gets him results that work.

1 year result

Erin has been training with me for 6 months. She started training with me because there was a need to train with purpose and have some accountability. She was also after a routine and some advice on how to train and do it properly and safely.

Erin had a little bit of low back pain, some aches and pain from bad posture but nothing major.

Erin trusted me to guide her to get better, yet there was a non-traditional approach to the functional patterns method that I used, which sparked up a bit of conflict within her. This was based on what she thought was the "right" way to train in the gym. What soon followed was the beginning to understand that the functional patterns approach to training is manageable and tailored to the individual. It helped her progress in a slow manner to help build body and mind.

"Seeing the progress pics, I feel more confident in my ability. I can do more and I move way better now. I am fitter and very active. I can do more high intensity training with less fatigue. My job role is quite physical and I feel more confident and I am able to manage active recovery and be consistent with my training. I look good and feel good."

Nav started training with me, after he heard about fp. He was having problems with his hamstring. They would tighten up during running sessions, to the point where they would feel like they were going to tear.

Nav plays touch football in a competitive comp. He can run up to 5 hrs a week playing in a high level comp, which means that, this was a big deal for him.

Normal training consisted of, high speed sprints, typical gym training sessions, rehab glute and hamstring strength training sessions from the physio, which didn't work.

Pain levels:

Hamstring: 8/10- 0/10

Lower back 4/10- 0/10

Shoulder pain 8/10- 4/10 which is a work in progress.

Part of our approach to eliminating the hamstring pain, was the movement elimination protocol. Which meant, that for a while Nav could not run at all. We also were strict on what exercises he could do. We did functional patterns exercises to improve his gait cycle and correct his dysfunctions.

It's nice to see him playing the sport he loves again and operating from a way better functional frame and better biomechanics.

Carolyn- Rheumatoid arthritis pain reduction

Age 48

Carolyn has been training with me for 1 year. She started training with me, as the only thing she would do for her pain was steroids and panadol.

Carolyn has rheumatoid arthritis and chronic inflammatory disorder. With that comes joint pain, fevers, rash and pain in the soft tissue. The arthritis is visible in the hands, but the pain moves around and intensifies throughout the entire body. Part of our plan, was to implement strict fp protocols, which included, quitting drinking alcohol daily, smoking cigarettes daily, as well as caffeine daily, grains and eating a whole food diet. We also made sure she was properly hydrated, as she would barely drink a glass of water a day.

*Pain flare-ups from 9/10 - 3/10

*Rash from 8/10 - 3/10

*Fevers from 8/10 - 2/10

*Energy levels have increased.

There was a time when she could barely get going in the morning. Now, her energy levels are more sustained throughout the day and can function more for her work and her kids. Carolyn's posture and movement have also increased. She has noticed that in the mornings, she now doesn't have to hobble or shuffle towards the bathroom to get ready. She would struggle to lift her arms up. After her morning journey to work, she would get out of the car to find that she would stiffen up again and struggle to get out of the car.

*That was a 9/10 and now it's a 2/10. By 7pm at night, everything would be shutting down for her. She could barely hold her towel up after a shower.

It's been great training Carolyn, providing the right tools for her to implement so she can live a happier life. Our work here is not done, but this is definitely a huge congratulations to her for putting in the work to come this far. Well done mate!
